Columbus Mariners Tournament

The Nighthawks 13AA sponsered by Granite & Marble Interiors of Fremont played their 1st tournament of the year in Columbus, NE on May 5th & 6th.  Game one was against the host team, Columbus Mariners and we were off to a slow start with a few defensive errors to allow the Mariners 5 runs in the top of the 1st and took Bergan off the mound early.  The Nighthawks answered back though with 4 runs in the bottom off base hits by Tyler, Nick and Sam and a double by Gage.  Addison and Drew both walked and accounted for 2 of the runs with Bergan and Gage crossing for the other 2.  The Mariners didn't let up though scoring 3 more runs in the 2nd and 5 in the 4th inning.  The Nighthawks made a charge in the 5th with 4 more runs but fell short losing 13-9.

Game 2 was against the Millard Lightning and the Nighthawks were ready for this game.  Bergan was back on the mound, this time with some good defense behind him.  The bats were working good in this game too, Riley, Gage and Addison all going 2 for 3 with 2 RBI's each.  Just about everyone on the team hit the ball this game.  Bergan and the defense held the Lightning to just 1 run 4 innings, but gave up 4 in the 5th and 3 in the 7th inning to make the game close, but held on to win 9-8.

The 3rd game was against the West O Mustangs who had been hitting well all day long and didn't let up agaist us.  The Nighthawks looked pretty tired though and just couldn't get anything going offensively.  The Mustangs were hitting good base hits everywhere that we wern't and gave us our 2nd lose of pool play that dropped us to the consolation bracket.

Game 1 on Sunday was against a very good Columbus Mariners 12AAA team.  It was looking like a defensive struggle with neither team getting a hit until the 5th inning when Tyler and Gage both got base hits and then Brant with a RBI double started the scoring.  Sam pitched a great game and Drew came in and closed it out in the 6th only giving up 1 run the whole game.  The Nighthawks won another close one 3-1.

Game 2 Sunday the Nighthawks faced Millard Lightning for the 2nd time in the tournament.  The game started off like it was going to be another defensive battle, Drew had our only hit through 3 innings and no runs.  Tyler was pitching and held the Lightning to only 2 runs through 4 1/3 innings, but that was 2 more runs than what we had after the 3rd.  Tyler led off the 4th inning with a base hit, followed by a double from Gage and a single from Addison and another double from Riley to score 3 big runs in the 3rd to put the Nighthawks on top.  Drew stepped on the mound in the 4th and held the Lightning to only 1 more run.  Brant started the 5th inning with a walk and Tyler followed with an RBI double.  Then in the 6th Riley drew the walk and Nick drove him in to give the Nighthawks the win.

Riley played really good at shortstop the last game, and Nick may have found a new home in left making some nice catches and turning one of them into a double play.

It was the 1st tournament of the year for the Nighthawks and all in all they didn't play too bad, just a few mistakes in a couple of innings makes a big difference in the outcome of the game.  There wasn't a team there that the Nighthawks couldn't beat.

Nighthawks GMI 13AA vs West O Rays

GMI took on the West O Rays in a soggy chilly double header on Sunday 4/28.  GMI coming off their 1st win picked up right where they left off.  Sam Martinez started on the mound as the rain strated coming down.  Sam pitched 4 solid innings holding the Rays to only 3 runs.  The defense was nothing short of outstanding.  It's hard to single out any one player because they all gave 110%.

Nothing got past Tyler Push at short all game long, Drew Poulas made another diving catch in center, he's making a habit of making great catches out there.  Brant Ridder not to be outdone made a diving catch at short.  Sam caught a line drive hit straight back at him faster than you could blink.  The whole defense was solid all day.

The hitting started off a little slow going 3 and out the 1st inning, but in the 2nd things started looking better, a single by Bergen Hofer got things started.  Then Drew Poulas walked followed by a single from Riley Harms driving in the 1st run for GMI.  The guys really showed a lot of patience at the plate, it seemed like every batter took the pitcher deep into the count and 6 walks in the game kind of proves that out.
From the 2nd inning on it was pretty much all GMI scoring 1 in the 2nd, 3 in the 3rd inning, 1 in the 4th and 2 in the 5th and final inning.  Great defense, solid pitching and aggresive base running all combined for a 7-3 win in game one.
GMI didn't let up in game 2 either.  Brock Hagarty pitch a solid 4 innings only giving up 2 runs.  The defense seems to be the story of the day for GMI, great catches in this game too, by Bergen Hofer, Gage Harbaugh got one behind the plate, nice stops in the infield, I don't think one single ball got through the infield in either game.
GMI had a lot of good at bats in game 2 drawing 7 walks and 3 of those walks crossed the plate for runs.  The hits are still slow to come, but we are making the most of the ones we do get.  I think the boys are getting more comfortable at the plate each game so the hits are going to start real soon.
GMI still scored 8 runs to win 8-3 for their 3rd win in a row. They are on a good streak right now and it's fun to watch.  The 1st tournament of the season is coming up next weekend and I expect the streak to continue through it too.
Leave me a comment if you have anything to add, a great play I missed, or just let me know if you like the post or not.  Thanks for reading.

Granite Marble Interiors vs Lincoln Cyclones

The Nighthawks 13AA Granite Marble Interiors met the Lincoln Cyclones for a double header Sunday, April 22.  Bergen Hofer was on the mound for the 1st game and pitched a great game holding the Cyclones to only 4 runs.  GMI had some trouble getting the bats going though and only managed one run of their own to go down 1-4.

The defence for GMI was showing some signs of improvement in the first game with only a couple of errors.  Gage Harbaugh did a good job catching only letting a couple of pitches get past him.  Gage is improving behind the plate every game.
Drew Poulas made a couple of nice catches in the outfield which was nice to see.  The outfield has had so problems early this year just letting the ball bounce in front of them instead of taking the extra step to make the catch.  Drew didn't let that happen this game.
Game two GMI was the home team for this game and got the bats going in the top of the 1st.  Brock Hegarty did his job as leadoff taking the pitcher deep and ending up with a walk.  Tyler Push then hit a nice double to score Brock.  Addison Gloeb then singled moving Tyler to 3rd.  Riley Harms hit into a sacrifice to score Tyler to give GMI 2 runs in the 1st.
Addison started on the mound in the 2nd game and was throwing some good heat shutting down the Cyclones in the 1st.  The 2nd inning Drew got on by way of a walk followed by a single Sam, and we managed 1 more run in the second.  The Cyclones also picked up a run to make the score 3-1 after two.  The Cyclones pick up one in the 4th to make it a 1 run game at 3-2 GMI.
GMI had a big inning in the 5th, Gage got things going with a single followed by Tyler drawing a walk.  The a shot from Addison for a double and scoring Gage and Tyler.  Riley also got a single and Bergen walked to give GMI a 3 run inning.  Cyclones wern't going away scoring 3 runs of their own to keep themselves only 1 run back.  Neither team scored in the 6th.

Drew pitched the late innings and did pretty good, he also had some good defence behind him to shut down the Cyclones in the final inning giving GMI their 1st and much needed win.

The next up for GMI will be the West O Rays at home.  Check back for photos and comments on that game and if you have any comments or suggestions please feel free to post them.
